Gayatri Mantra & Gratitude Meditation
Welcome to this mantra and meditation practice to cultivate gratitude. We will be working with the highly revered Gayatri Mantra, from one of the oldest sacred texts of Hinduism. The Gayatri Mantra loosely translates to "May the light of the universe illuminate and inspire us on a physical, emotional, spiritual and mental layer". It is dedicated to Savitar, the sun god, and is considered a powerful invocation for enlightenment and spiritual awakening.
The Gayatri Mantra is traditionally recited as follows:
Om Bhur Bhuvah Swah
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi
Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat
"Om" – the primordial sound of the universe
"Bhur" – the earth
"Bhuvah" – the atmosphere
"Swah" – the heavens
"Tat" – that
"Savitur" – of Savitar (the sun)
"Varenyam" – fit to be adored
"Bhargo" – divine light
"Devasya" – of the deity
"Dhimahi" – we contemplate
"Dhiyo" – intellects or understanding
"Yo" – who
"Nah" – our
"Prachodayat" – may inspire or illuminate
